Cat Litter

Where to start with cat litter, so many choices. There is clay, wheat, pellets, crystals, grass etc.. Cats can be very picky about cat litter so it is important to choose one that they like. You want a litter that is as dust free as possible and tracks as little as possible. Cats tend not to like litter that has fragrance. Fragrance is for our benefit not the cats. My cats are very picky. I have tried every kind of litter and they prefer the fragrance free clay litter. It tracks and it has dust but I do what my cats tell me to do. I personally would prefer a pellet litter or tofu litter.

In my business I have experienced every type of litter, some horrible some good and some great. I'll start with the worst, crystal or silicone litter. This type of litter tracks everywhere and does not control odors. The only good thing about is, no dust. The good litters are the lightweight clay hard clumping litter. These litters track a bit and have some dust but they clump hard and control odors. The best litters are pellet and wood, like The Breeze and Okocat

These litters do not produce dust, they are all natural and they control odors. However, my absolute favorite litter is tofu litter. This is a new litter to me. I only have a couple of clients that use it. I love it because it is lightweight, very little tracking, hard clumps, no dust and all natural. I wish my cats would like it. I also wish it were more affordable. There are subscription services that offer it. One that I found on Amazon is

There are several different brands of tofu litter to explore. They all offer basically the same benefits. I am a big fan of it. I will continue to try to get my cats to switch. If they do I'll update you on there tofu journey.

My second favorite litter is the wood type. Okocat is my favorite brand in the wood category. It is all natural, no dust, very litter tracking, excellent clumping and odor control. Here is a link :

Next favorite is the Breeze system. This is a complete litter solution. It includes the litter box, pads and pellets. It has great odor control, very little tracking, super convenient, stays clean and easy to manage. Several of my clients use this with great success

If your cat takes to it then it's a great choice. I like the bigger model.

So to recap, the three links I provided are my top 3 favorite cat litters.

You could choose the greatest cat litter in the world but the box you put it in is just as important. You want to have two boxes for every one cat, if space allows. If you are in a small space that may not be an option. Next you want to have a good size box with high sides (especially if you have male cats). Stainless steel boxes are best but plastic will work. Stainless steel is easier to clean and controls bacteria. Keep a mat or pad underneath to help contain trackings and "misses". I use a mat and pee pad combination under my litter boxes. I have 3 boys with bad aim. Most important is keeping the box clean. Some people use liners but liners don't fit most litter boxes. It's best to change and wash/clean your cat's box weekly. If you only have one cat you can probably get away with once a month cleaning.

Here is a link to my favorite litter box:

This particular box has high sides that are removable for easy cleaning. Plus it's plenty big. You can also use a liner with this box.

My favorite mat to go under the box is the Gorilla Grip Xlg mat. It's easy to clean and it stays in place. The link is below.

Let me know what your favorite cat litter/box combination is. I love checking out new products and am open to all suggestions. The suggestions above are based on my experience with my cat clients and with my cats. I've done a lot of research into the different cat litters. Hopefully my suggestions can help you.
