Reading and understanding the ingredient list on cat food packaging is very important. You want to feed your kitty a healthy diet that they will thrive on. Here we will look at what to avoid in wet food cat food. The bad ingredients in dry food also apply to wet.


What to avoid:

Artificial ingredients, such as flavorings and colors

Meat byproducts and unspecified animal ingredients

Synthetic vitamins and minerals

Rendered fats

Synthetic preservatives

Soy

Corn


In wet food many companies add a thickener so it has the consistency of a pate not soup. Some of the bad thickeners are:

Carrageenan - a gelling agent

Guar Gum

Xanthan Gum

Cassia Gum

Thickeners are known for causing inflammation and GI issues.


A safe thickener is Agar Agar.


Here is an example of an excellent wet food. The meat is named. No artificial ingredients, no gums and no synthetic ingredients. The majority of nutrients are naturally derived.



Here is an example of a bad wet food.


You will notice where the salt is located. Everything after salt is less than 1%. This food also contains nitrates, a known carcinogen. Unfortunately this is a very common brand on the shelves of all grocery and pet food stores. It has unspecified animal ingredients, gums, synthetic minerals and artificial colors.


Read the labels on your cat food products.

Look for statements on the packaging such as:

Human Grade

Responsibly sourced ingredients

No artificial ingredients

No soy or wheat

Country of origin

No byproducts


Cats also like variety. Pick up several different varieties and flavors. Rotational feeding is recommended. No cat wants to eat the same exact food day after day. Make sure your cat has plenty of water sources. Change the water daily and wash the bowls. Always clean your cats bowls after each meal. Never store dry food in a plastic container. Keep dry food in it’s original packaging.
