Let’s Talk Water Fountains

thecatsmeowffx

Once upon a time the only option for giving your cat water was putting water in a bowl and filling when needed. Now the options for water giving are numerous . I have seen and used fountains, gravity bowls and plain bowls. My experience with all the different fountains varies greatly. There are excellent, good, fair and bad fountains. I personally don't like gravity bowls. My choice is good old fashioned regular bowls.

Fountains are a great idea, especially for cats that are attracted to moving water. Some cats will only drink moving water versus still water. The main problem with fountains is keeping them clean and keeping the pumps working. They need to be cleaned regularly or they will get slimy and gross. If you have multiple cats the fountains need to be cleaned weekly. Next problem is the pump. Some pumps work better than others but inevitably the pump will give out. Next issue is the filter. Filters need to be replaced often. Even though you are changing the filter you still need to clean the base and all parts of the fountain. There are plastic, metal and stone fountains. Stainless steel fountains are probably the best as they are not porous like plastic and keep the water cleaner. They are also easier to clean. Plastic fountains need to be scrubbed to get clean. They are usually much cheaper than the metal fountains. Stone fountains are the most expensive but they get just as slimy as their plastic and metal counterparts.

My personal favorite fountains are the wireless, stainless steel fountains. They can be pricey but they do a great job. Even though they are my favorite I still use bowls. I use plain stainless steel bowls, never plastic. I wash the bowls daily.

Here is a fountain I recommend

I like this fountain because it is wireless. It has two spouts and it's easy to clean.

As far as bowls go, I recommend stainless steel as well. Try to avoid ceramic that has been glazed. You don't want anything that has been painted either. The paints and the glaze could have toxic components to them. If the glaze chips then kitty could ingest it, not good.

Here is a really cute stainless steel water/food duo. This is easy to clean, no parts and not toxic.
